Is a watering system worth it in a London garden?
London is one of the drier parts of the UK, and summers have been getting hotter. New turf, young plants, containers and raised beds can dry out fast. A system helps in these cases:
- new lawns, which must be kept damp while the roots form
- raised beds and containers, which dry out faster than open ground
- roof terraces and courtyards where hand watering is awkward
- homes where people travel often or work long days
It is less useful on a garden that is mostly clay and already wet, or one planted with drought-tolerant plants. We will say honestly if a simple tap timer and a few drip lines do the job. Water butts can feed a drip system too, which cuts mains use.
